Gut & Digestive Health

Explore digestion, bloating, probiotics, fibre and claims about the gut microbiome.

A change in gut bacteria or a laboratory barrier marker does not automatically mean fewer symptoms or better health. Our reviews distinguish strains, preparations, doses and studied conditions, so evidence for one application is not extended to every gut-health claim.

Questions to explore

  • Are Postbiotics Really Better Than Probiotics for Gut Health? — WEAK. Certain inactivated bacterial preparations have evidence for particular benefits, including an IBS trial. That does not establish that postbiotics as a category work better than probiotics, or that any product labelled dead bacteria improves gut health.
